Using her wayfinding skills, she returns to Te Kā and gets past Te Kā to return the heart. Reaching the top of the mountain, Moana realizes that the island is gone and that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti without her heart. She asks the ocean to clear a path so that she can have Te Kā approach her.

As Moana leaves, her grandmother’s light fades out, and her spirit appears in the form of a manta ray, which guides Moana past the reef and into the seas. The ocean carries Moana to Maui’s island, where the two meet and fail to see eye to eye. Maui is more concerned with Moana’s boat, which he steals by trapping Moana in a cave.

She ignores his protest, which brings Te Kā to partially destroy Maui’s hook, severely damaging it and sending them far back across the ocean. Out of anger, Maui leaves Moana stranded in the middle of the ocean, fearing that going back to fight Te Kā will permanently destroy his hook. He flies away after telling her that the ocean chose the wrong person to save her people which is something she has been trying to find out why. A follow-up to Moana was originally developed as a miniseries for Disney+, but by February 2024 it had been reworked into a theatrical sequel. Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, returned to score and write the songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear provided additional songs. When they approach Motufetu’s location, Nalo unleashes his storm on them, with Maui being forced to double-back to take out some of the tornadoes going for Moana and her crew.

A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of Motunui’s chief Tui, to return the heart to Te Fiti. Sixteen years later, blight strikes the island, killing vegetation and shrinking the fish catch. Moana suggests going beyond the island’s reef with her pet pig, Pua, to find more fish and discover what is happening, but Tui forbids it. One day, when Moana attempted to sail beyond the reef after an argument with her father, she got her foot injured when it was stuck on some coral.

Moana premiered during the AFI Fest at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 14, 2016, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 23. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $687 million worldwide. The short film, Gone Fishing, was released in 2017 as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release of Moana. It shows Maui trying to catch a fish with his magical fishhook, while Moana tries to stop him from harming a baby turtle. After sadly telling the ocean to bring the heart to someone else, Gramma Tala appears as a spiritual manta ray and encourages her to discover who she is based on what she has learned, what she has lived through, who she has met, and where she comes from. Moana proudly realizes who she has meant to be within herself and what defines her and swims down to retrieve the heart.

After Moana gets struck by lightning, her ancestors revive her as a demigoddess and give her a magical tattoo. Moana sets sail on a camakau from the cavern along with her dimwitted pet rooster, Heihei, who stowed away on it. They are caught in a typhoon and shipwrecked on an island, where she finds Maui, who boasts about his achievements.
She fought and outsmarted the pirates, managing to rescue Heihei where the two managed to escape and jump back onto their boat, with Heihei spitting out the Heart upon hitting the canoe’s mast. After escaping from and defeating the Kakamora, Moana and Heihei continued their journey with Maui reluctantly accompanying them. Moana blows her conch shell from atop Motufetu, Moana and soon, her call is answered as other rafts begin to arrive from various directions. Maui compliments Moana’s tattoos by saying “my tattoos are still cooler than yours”.
